The fall edition of the zine went out recently, and I realize I failed to explain how (why?) our wedding pictures and the spider picture were in 3D. I’ve always loved stereo 3D, and this issue featured a mix of native 3D pictures and pictures that were manipulated after the fact to appear 3D (like when a movie gets a rerelease in 3D). The wedding pictures were taken with a 3D camera — specifically an ImageTech 3D FX— which was made in the mid-90s. It takes three pictures at once that get combined later in Photoshop using red and blue. The picture of Birdie and the spider on the back cover was taken as a regular 2D picture (Canon 5D) and then edited in Photoshop to essentially put different elements on different planes that can be perceived through the magic of 3D glasses. Also, the picture of Birdie with the spider was not a composite, which is maybe more obvious in this picture. She really was next to a giant web and spider made of trash. As soon as Hailey wraps up sewing Halloween costumes, we’ll be setting up some Christmas photoshoots… we will see if we can resist the urge to make them 3D.
